A traditional career path would have seen people study at university for their chosen industry, get an entry level job and then worked their way up the ladder. Alternatively some may have skipped college and gone straight into the working world, earning their chops before moving higher up in the industry. What we have seen in recent years however has been a large number of people who are not content with being pigeon-holed as having a single career choice. Take for example the brilliant Roger Wolfson, TV scriptwriter, author, producer and director who actually began his career as a hard working attorney and speechwriter, now there are some skills to have on your resume.
What people like Roger have done throughout their career is to think outside the box as to what they are capable of and how they can spin that into a career. This is critical for all of us to learn from and here is why thinking this way makes sense.
Wider Range of Options
Once you are able to dd a variety of strings to your bow in this way you can seriously increase your range of options as to where you will work and with who. This means that the trend within a certain industry cannot hold you back in the way that it can others, and where there are no jobs, you will have a breadth of options to choose from.
More Fulfillment
When you have the skills to switch between jobs or to lend your passion to a variety of industries, there is no doubt that you are going to get significantly more fulfillment in your life. There are so many people around the world who are trapped in careers and job roles, mainly because they have skills which are only suited to that. The reality however is that we all have it in us to branch out and try new things and that means that we have the opportunity to gain more fulfillment from our career choices.
Nothing Stopping Us
What people like Roger have shown us all is that we no longer have to fit into a certain category, we don’t have to fall within the rules of that traditional career path. In the modern age we have more access to training and to education than ever before. Through these resources we can become highly skilled in a wide range of fields and that can then be invested in seeking new challenges and career options for ourselves.
None of us are made to be just one thing. It is true that we all have a range of natural abilities and certain skills which may certainly help us for particular careers. With this being said however, there is nothing wrong with using your skills and educating yourself in other areas, to create a wide range of career choices which can help us to lead a richer and more varied life.
