Mule Deer Hunting: 5 Tips for Tagging a Mule

For professionals and amateurs alike, bagging a trophy is the main aim of a hunt. Proper gear like a bow hunting camo can increase the chances of a successful kill, but some other factors also contribute to it. If this fall season you want to grab a trophy mule for your collection, then the following tips can increase your odds;

1. Know the Area:

Before even starting to shop for proper gear and equipment, you must first know the area you are about to hunt in. Mules are famous for their stealth and detection of even minor changes in their surroundings. Have a chat with fellow and experienced hunters, take a map of the area and highlight the areas where there is a deer population. There are dense woods where these animals live and getting lost is a real possibility, especially if the hunt takes more than a day or two.

2. Leave Early:

Early mornings are the best time for hunting; you necessarily don’t have to go out in the dark, but just after dawn will bring you the best hunting opportunities. Besides knowing the area of the hunt, you must also know the best time for it. Leaving early can increase your chances of tracking down and hunting a Mule deer. Also, animals start looking for food early, so that should also improve your odds for a successful game.

3. Camouflaged Gear:

People think hunting is a simple sport, you just show up with a rifle or a hunting bow, and that’s it. Ask any professional and experienced hunter; they will let you know the importance of a proper outfit. A camouflaged outfit helps you blend into the scenery and makes it difficult for the Mule to spot you. Add in an outfit that locks your body odor and you become practically invisible to the animal. Keep the environment in mind when you choose the camouflage since the same camo won’t work in all settings.

4. Right Binoculars:

If you want to increase your odds of spotting a deer, then a good pair of binoculars is necessary. The best binoculars to use are 10x42mm ones. Add in a sturdy tripod and you will be able to spot deer that others are sure to miss. Besides, they can also help you locate the best vantage points to see and observe your prey. So, invest in a good-quality pair of binoculars this hunting season.

5. Go Downhill:

It’s a well-known fact that a mule deer is usually spotted at mountain tops, but that is not always the case. Sometimes due to a shortage of food, they come downhill to feed. If you don’t come across any mule deer at high altitudes during a hunt, it would be a wise decision to look for them downhill. Remember, mule hunting is all about patience and clever movement; adjust your hunting game accordingly.

Hunting a mule deer is exciting and adventurous but the experience can only be enjoyed if you prepare beforehand. Take help from the above tips and hunt a trophy mule deer this season.
