How to Socialise at a Party When You Do Not Know Anyone

Smith · February 21, 2019 · Leave a Comment

Getting an invitation to a party when you know no one attending it except the person celebrating might make the event awkward. You are only going because you want to show your love and respect for the person who invited you. It does not mean though that you cannot have fun. It can still be a fun-filled night if you know how to socialise even when you know no one around you.

Calm down first

You might feel worried right now because you overthink things. Think about having fun at the party and using it as the opportunity to meet new people. If not, at least you were there to show your love for the person who invited you. Remember that you are not necessarily the star of this event. No one knows you, so it is okay to stay if you relax and blend into the night.

Smile at other guests

Instead of looking terrified, you can smile at the other guests to show that you are confident. You might even start some small talk with strangers when you keep smiling. You will also improve your mood and reduce your stress level if you smile at everyone. The good thing when you look confident is you even start to feel confident.

Do not be yourself

You might hear people telling you to just be yourself especially in this type of setting. It is lousy advice when your real self is loud, obnoxious and dramatic. This event is not the place where you can show your personality. You need to demonstrate appropriate behaviour. Keep quiet when there is something else going on like a speech or a performance. You can talk with random people but be careful with what you are talking about. Avoid oversharing since no one wants to hear your dramas. Be approachable, fun and friendly to everyone.

Wear something nice

It is already awkward being in a place where you know no one. It gets worse when you feel underdressed. You need to know the theme of the party and follow the instructions written on the invitation. If asked to wear formal clothing, you need to bring your A game. Look for made to measure suits that hug your body correctly and make you look stunning for the night. It might be costly, but you can use it on other occasions. When you look so stunning, you do not even need to look for people to talk with. They will come over and initiate the conversation.

Have fun

You can have fun even when you are alone. If someone sings on stage, you can sing along. If the dance floor is open for everyone, you can find someone to dance with. Enjoy the meal served for the guests. Before you leave, let your friend know that you were there and you had fun.

Any party can be awkward, even if you know people there, especially if you do not use correct behaviour.
