3 Tips For Keeping Bugs Away When Spending Time Outside In The Summer

Smith · June 14, 2021 · Leave a Comment

No one wants to be stuck inside all summer because they’re worried about the bugs that they’ll encounter outside. But to keep yourself safe and comfortable, it’s important that you do what you can to keep pesky summertime bugs away from you and those you’re with, aside from having a professional pest control company come take care of things.

To help you in doing this, here are three tips for keeping bugs away when spending time outside in the summer.

Avoid Areas Where Bugs Like To Hang Out

The best practices for avoiding bugs will largely depend on what bugs you’re dealing with. The editors of The Healthy share that some of the most dangerous and annoying summertime bugs include things like mosquitoes, spiders, bees, ticks, ants, and flies. And while some of these bugs only come out during certain times of the day, other bugs have specific areas that they like to congregate. So the trick here is knowing where those bugs will be and then avoiding those areas.

Generally, mosquitoes love water, so keep standing water to a minimum to keep mosquitoes away. For ticks, try to avoid trekking through taller grass or brush where the ticks could easily jump onto your skin. And for flies, bees, and ants, they want to be where there’s food, so keep away from areas where food is left out or easily available for them to take advantage of.

Don’t Be An Easy Target

Sometimes, you can’t escape where the bugs are. In situations like this, what you’ll want to do is keep yourself from being an easy target.

A lot of times, bugs are attracted to certain scents, like those that smell delicious to them. Knowing this, you’ll want to try to smell like something they want to stay away from. According to Eliza Florendo and Shea Simmons, a contributor to The Bustle, scents like Deet, lavender, peppermint, citronella, garlic, and basil can be helpful to keep bugs away from you. So if you’re going to be outside, consider swapping your normal perfume or cologne for one of these other options.

Protect Your Body

Along with trying to make your body as uninteresting to bugs as possible, you also should be taking steps to prevent yourself from allowing bugs to get to your skin when you’re outside. This can be done by wearing long pants and shirts rather than clothes that keep too much of your skin exposed. Try looking for clothes that are thin, light in color, and sheer so that you can still keep cool when with most clothing on.

If you want to enjoy the time you have to spend outside this summer without getting hundreds of bug bites or swatting away annoying bugs flying around you, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you see how this can be done.
