Business burn-out is something that should never be underestimated. We live in times when competition is huge for practically every single business. It is so often noticed that managers end up doing so much that their health is negatively affected. Time management is an often disregarded skill that is actually vital for the best possible managers.
German Trujillo Manrique states that most time management problems are actually reality because of not properly understanding how to prioritize what needs to be done. This is completely correct since there are always many tasks that can be done. If you were to do them all, it would be impossible since a day only has 24 hours and you should spend just around 8 at work, in an ideal scenario, of course.
Working really long hours and not having time for yourself or those you love will inevitably lead to burn-out. Having departments and offices cluttered, with faulty communication channels can only make things work. Unfortunately, this is the reality of most businesses out there. Working too much and not being able to properly manage everything that is to be done will lower team productivity and team morale.
The good news is that it is not at all difficult to overcome priority problems. You just need to “spy” on what the most respected and successful managers do. Those that are highly successful have some things in common:
- The highly successful manager is always a really respected role model.
- The successful manager practices what is preached.
- The successful manager will invest money and time in themselves and their team. This is highly important since one of the reasons why management fails is not being aware of what team members want, what they are good at and what they do not like.
- The successful manager will develop people through coaching and education.
Obviously, you need to be as organized as possible. Whenever office clutter is present, it needs to be removed. You have to take advantage of modern communication tools and streamline the entire communication process between you and the team and you and upper management.
Speaking about coaching and education, a great way to improve the efficiency of any department is to identify what is lacking and work on improving it. Coaching and training will help everyone to be better at the job so more will be done in less time. As time is gained, fewer time management problems can appear.
Last but not least, a big problem for many managers is that they do not think about themselves. They just work and work and eventually end up burned out, which isn’t good for the business. You can only be as effective as your mental and physical state dictate. This practically means that it is a really good idea to dedicate some time to yourself. Have one day per week when you spend time with your family and friends. Then, seriously consider working out. As you do all these even your sleep will be improved. It is practically impossible to be really effective and properly manage time in the event that you are not healthy and your mind is not focused on the job.
