Through my good friend Dr Mark Swaim I have gotten to know my fair share of doctors over the years and as a result I am often asked what they are really like. I have to be honest I always thought that this was a strange question but it dawn on me that more often than not, the only time that people see doctors is when they are performing the miracles that they do in hospitals and clinics, and of course they have a job which is not exactly average, so of course people want to know about who is behind the mask.
Definitely Different
The first thing that I will say is that doctors are not all alike, so I am giving a general idea based on those who I know and who I have known throughout my life. The one thing that I will say is that doctors are definitely a little bit different from the rest of us, and I can’t exactly put my finger on what it is. The humor is certainly different, a bit darker, and so too is their general behaviors, quite proper and upright people in my experience.
Lovely
Honestly I have never met a doctor who wasn’t warm and friendly with me, even after speaking to them following one of their hellish shifts. This goes against what many people think about them, that they are just soulless and emotionless beings who are hard-wired to cure and treat us and do nothing else. I guess when you think about it, if you have to be so serious in your day job, it makes sense that outside of that you’d be much happier being warm, kind and have some fun.
Intelligence
We all know that in order to become a doctor you must have a high level of intelligence when it comes to the sciences, as well as a hard working nature. What I can say about all of the doctors that I have ever come into contact with however is that they are all highly intelligent, and that is not just about all things medical, they just have a naturally high intellect and IQ which is clearly evident.
Details
In writing this piece I guess I’ve been thinking more about how doctors are than ever before, and now that I come to think of it there is something about the details which they always seem to focus on, at least the docs that I know do. I suppose when you think about it this makes a great deal of sense given how they have to be so detail oriented in their jobs, and this is clearly something which they then extend into their life away from the hospital.
These are just the main takeaways that I thought up when considering exactly what these amazing people are like away from the hospital, and as I said at the beginning they are not all alike, but they do have similar nuances.
